The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
